A lawyer who works on behalf of a woman who was beaten by police has filed a defamation case against a Mumbai police officer.
The lawyer, Suresh Chavan, has filed an affidavit in the Maharashtra High Court seeking damages for the police officer, Sunil Kumar, for alleged wrongful arrest and violation of his right to privacy.
Mr Chavan said the complainant has lodged an application in the Bombay High Court and a trial court on her behalf.
The court has already ruled in favour of Ms Chavan and ordered the police to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to the complainant, according to the lawyer.
Ms Chavan was attacked by police on July 4 while riding her bike on the Minto Expressway near Kota, Mumbai.
Ms Chavans car was hit by a police van.
She was also allegedly injured by a passerby and a bystander.
Ms Chandan said the police officers involved have not yet been arrested.
The police have said the incident was reported to them at 11.10 am on July 3.
The complainant is not willing to give her name as she has not been able to file an FIR against the police, police said.
